Programs -activities throughout the year

Art education – world cultures – activity related, verbal education, reading, geographic – supply a theme snack based on culture – sensory, nutrition, etc.

Hungry Bunch Prom – provide prom picture on site in specialty frames to take home with children/youth attending. Between 65 – 80 children every year - ages 12-18. We provide parts of the dinner, snacks and other refreshments. Other activities at the prom are 2-3 art activities depended on the theme, such as Chinese writer on a banner as a gift to take home with them, lanterns (art supplies) Pictures would include ink, 5x7 paper @ $15.00. We also provide a CD one per youth of all prom pictures after prom.

Thanksgiving: Garrett's KidStrong provides two meals for at home and in hospital setting at Thanksgiving.

  • Garrett's KidStrong provides the sides for Thanksgiving dinner, vegetables, mashed potatoes, pies, bread and the boxes for the meals. Packaging materials, trays, plates .. utensils.. for 14 families estimated at 4 people per family for a total of 56 people. The special Thanksgiving Gift Box is delivered by Garrett’s throughout the Austin metro area to low income families whose children have cancer and in treatment or in remission from cancer.
  • Auditorium – Thanksgiving for families at Dell for Blood and Cancer unit. More than 30 families usually will attend the Auditorium Thanksgiving. This meal is a complete meal with all the trimmings, plus activities and decorations, tablecloths. Yearly meals have proven this special gathering of families and their children of childhood cancer provides an extra benefit - in that families can built on friendship and knowing they are not alone with this disease that takes so many or permanently leaves scars and fears of the lives of children

Parent's Night out (PNO) - Currently at Christmas (goals are to do this 4 times a year) – opens from 5-10pm at a local church:  In 2010, we had 27 children dropped off at Garrett's KidStrong PNO. This activity is offered to any parent with a child in the blood/cancer unit (hem/co) clinic and their siblings. We provide activities such as video/gaming, creation of Christmas Ornaments, pictures with Santa, gift for each child, dinner, snacks, fruit, drinks and more.  Age's infant to 18. Volunteers assist with infants and children to provide safe harbor                                          

St. Baldrick's at Dell's Children Medical Center of Central Texas - Garrett's KidStrong provides educational information about childhood cancer, bottled water for all participants, 2 activities for the kids – could be hair painting, tattoos, face painting, etc.  In 2010, up to 800 people and children in attendance.                                                                                 

Clinic activities:  approximately 25 children a day participate in Garrett's KidStrong activities at the Hem/Oc clinic.  Often the clinic contacts Garrett's to bring in special activities besides our regular activities that often fall on special holidays                                                                      

  • Haunted Houses – October – pre-made cardboard houses from Hobby Lobby – nesting boxes for 3 sizes. Complete art materials bought to provide decoration of the haunted houses. Volunteers guide the children to build their creation and testimony have shared these special gifts created by the child with cancer becomes a family masterpiece! Materials provided by Garrett's KidStrong includes 3 sizes of boxes, paint, brushes, Halloween type decorations, snack, tissue paper.. For those children unable to attend, materials are left for 100 Haunted Houses
  • Video Games - for Wii. In 2010 Garrett's KidStrong raised the dollars to provide to the HEM/Oc Clinic Wii Game Stations and games.
  • Bowling tournament – Garrett's KidStrong would like to add a bowling tournament from the Wii game and provide 25 trophies – all children are winners 
  • Christmas Trees – we fulfill what the Hem/Oc clinic requests by providing live Christmas trees and decorations           
  • Mother’s Day and Father Day’s activities - plate painting, backpack decorating (Easter), memorable keepsake activities, snacks, all art supplies, paint, brushes, gems, etc.  ($400 per activity for 25 children)  
  • Pedicabs  – October – in conjunction with LiveStrong challenge. Decorate the cabs, breakfast tacos, t-shirts for family and kids, gift bags 

Various additional clinic activities as called – at least twice a year for 25 children each activity
